It’s a bit of a catch-22 for a photographer who has spent a lot of time photographing the sun in the past.
Sometimes, he says, it rains but the water is still good for his camera, so he’s happy to take a photo of the sun.
“If it’s raining, you need to bring a lens, and I do not bring a DSLR,” he said.

Water is a water-based material that absorbs heat, turning it into light, said Michael Crammond, an engineer and photographer based in Vancouver, British Columbia.
“The water is very dense,” he explained.
“So you’re looking at water that’s very dense and very reflective, and then the light that you get from the sun is also reflecting off the water.”
That light bounces back to you in the water.

For some, the refraction effect can be a problem because it can interfere with the ability to capture the photo of a light source.
That’s where a lens comes in.
The lens lets the photographer focus his light on the surface of the water where the water falls, and when the refracted light hits the surface, it is absorbed by the water and reflected back to the photographer.
Crammond has used a pair of his Canon DSLRs to take some of his favorite photos.
“I like to shoot with a Nikon D4, so I have a lot more lenses,” he pointed out.
“A lot of times when I’m shooting with my Canon, I can’t get a good exposure.”
He also noted that he’s been photographing waterfalls in the mountains, and sometimes, it happens that the waterfalls look very beautiful when you shoot them in the same light as the sun, but not when the light is reflected off the mountains.
“It depends on the lighting,” he admitted.

Waterfalls that are illuminated by flash have a more diffuse reflection, making them difficult to photograph, he added, adding that a high contrast lighting is essential when photographing a waterfall.
The effect is also different for waterfalls that look like they’re underwater, Cramsons said.
The reflections from waterfalls, when they’re illuminated by the flash, are a little bit brighter, and therefore easier to photograph.
Cramsmond said that if a waterfall is illuminated by an underwater flash, the reflections from the water will be a little more subtle.
“And the way the water reflects it is slightly different than the way it reflects from a high energy flash.”
Cramston said that because of this, he’s rarely photographed a waterfall with his Canon when the sun isn’t shining.
He said that when he’s photographing raindrops with his camera in the rain, he’ll always bring a camera, and only take photos when it rains.
“When it rained, the water was just good for the camera,” he noted.
“Because the water absorbed the light.”
